Applications
We perform spinal injections under both CT and fluoroscopic guidance for the management of symptoms caused by spinal disc disease, sciatica, facet joint arthritis and sacro-iliitis. These include:
- Nerve root injections
- Facet joint injections and medial branch blocks
- Epidural injections
- Sacroiliac joint injections
- Spinal biopsies
Injections may also be useful to help diagnose the exact source of pain.

Technique
The injection usually includes a mixture of a corticosteroid (anti-inflammatory) and local anaesthetic. A small quantity of x-ray dye is also injected to confirm accurate needle position.
Patient information
These referrals usually come from a Consultant Spinal Surgeon after consultation with the patient. Oxford is the regional spinal centre and we work closely with our spinal surgeons, discussing the best treatment options tailored to individual patient needs.
Patients undergoing a spinal injection should refer to the ‘Information for patients’ section for further details.
